Several of the listed buildings on the hill are over 1400 years old and have been recently restored under the supervision of the Italian Ministry of Culture. Originally the buildings were a fortress at the border of the Easten Roman Empire with the Lombards. It later became a benedictine monastery and after 1474 a summer and hunting residence of noble families.
